According to Jen Mallia for Travel Pulse in a July 17th article, arriving in and departing Costa Rica will soon become easier for Canadians and Americans. The eGate technology is already in use at many major airports. In Costa Rica this technology is in place, but up until now was exclusive to Costa Rican Nationals. Passengers will scan their passport, then their image will be captured. Using facial recognition software that will run a check will take between only 10 and 15 seconds. If the passenger gets the green light, the process is done. A red light will incur a manual check.
Until the technology is fully implemented, it is still recommended to arrive three hours before your flight.
